How many tables fit under a 20x40 tent?

A 20 by 40 ft tent seats 24 guests around eight-seat rounds, or 60 at six-foot rectangular tables. Same canvas, two and a half times the guests — because a round table costs 12 by 12 ft with chairs and circulation, while a six-foot banquet table costs 8 by 6.5 ft. Shape is the decision; size only sets the ceiling.

Tent size to seats

One foot of clear aisle at the tent edge, 12 ft round footprint with chairs, 8 x 6.5 ft banquet footprint. Chair counts only: no dance floor, buffet or bar.

Why a 20x40 is the most misunderstood tent

A 20 by 40 ft tent looks like forty people. It holds twenty-four at rounds, because the usable rectangle is 18 by 38 ft after the edge aisle, and a round table needs twelve feet in each direction: one across, three deep.

Switch to six-foot banquet tables and the same tent holds ten of them, sixty seats. That is not a rounding difference. It is the difference between a dinner and a cocktail hour with chairs.

What eats the seats before the guests arrive

Three things take floor before the first table goes down: the buffet line, the bar, and the dance floor. Reserve about fifteen percent of the tent for service, and three square feet per dancing guest. In a 20 by 60 ft tent that leaves dance-floor capacity for roughly 148 people once four rounds are placed — more than the tent seats, which is why a smaller tent runs out of floor before it runs out of chairs.

If you need a dance floor and a buffet in a 20 by 40, plan on twenty guests, not twenty-four. The arithmetic that fits chairs rarely fits the evening.

Which shape should you rent

Rounds buy conversation and sightlines: everyone at the table can see the couple, and the aisle pattern stays open. Banquet tables buy seats: six feet of table per six guests is the cheapest seating per square foot you can rent.

The common failure is mixing them without rechecking the aisle. A row of banquet tables along a wall needs less depth than it looks, which tempts you to add rounds in the middle — and then the path from the entrance to the bar disappears.

Four checks before you order the tent

  1. Measure the clear footprint, then subtract two feet from each dimension for the edge aisle.

  2. Decide rounds or banquets before you pick the tent size, not after.

  3. Take out fifteen percent for buffet, bar and cake table.

  4. Walk the dance floor to the bar: if it passes between two tables, the tables move.
